Depends on the strength of the flare. Most, if not all, satellites are within the Earth's magnetic field: thus are protected from solar flares. However, some solar flares can be so powerful that they warp the magnetic field/create northern lights so far south that you could see them in Northern USA. This would cause widespread electrical interference and act like a large scale EMP. Mind you, this kind of event is so rare, that we have no record of such a thing within known history. Though it is technically possible.

We have not experienced such an event since modern history. You should be worried about X class flares.

Look out for Carrington Event storms. If one happens the NASA sattelites observing the sun will most likely be knocked out temporarily.
