Because of the buildings that are tall enough to obscure a decent portion of the crowd if a box pattern was used. Patterns like that are used to view people in alleyways, narrow streets, etc. Looks like a pretty normal search/monitor pattern if altitudes are limited or requested low, which they probably ran a low search pattern to be able to identify interesting activities in such a large group. Also not a pentagram.
