It doesn't (or shouldn't) take a civil engineering expert to see this. But those huge clusters of large buildings are called cities. They were built at a time of quick and large growth of population. These spots are near geographic locations excellent for import/export. At the time (in NYC) it made sense to build up rather than out to house it's booming population.

But I do like one quote I heard about the sky scrapers. Something along the lines of the executives are no more than modern day sorcerers. They use your life energy (time/money) for their own benefit and gain while living in their high towers.
