My guess: he was a communist that was caught spying in Australia by their secret intelligence services (ASIS), who poisoned him and dumped the body as a message to international marxists not to screw around down under, the same way as they did to a jewish spy called George Marshall three years earlier.

Either a spy killed by another spy or a guy that wanted to marry his mistress but she didn't want to so she murdered him.

He was a spy who had fallen in love with another spy. In his last moments he tried to get to her and ended up leaving the book scraps or w/e. They both had the same book and had known each other in the past.
