Much occult knowledge (and much knowledge in general) is rooted in the Greek civilization and culture which came to reign over and upon all eastern Mediterranean cultures including Israel and Egypt. Hermes Trismegistus for instance (only using him as an example) is a Greek name although he was said to have been from Egypt.

The Library of Alexandria was also Greek.
