whenever a celebrity dies young there's always conspiries of them having faked their death and living in hiding or something, where did this trend start? Are there any legit stories of a famous person faking their death and coming out some time later? Pic related is always said to be living in Cuba, just an example.

Also sorry if this isn't /x/ related, didn't know where else to post

bump for potential I'm also interested and too lazy to do my own research

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero_Redivivus_legend

Nero Redivivus Legend was a belief popular during the last part of the 1st century that Nero would return after his death in 68 AD. The legend was a common belief as late as the 5th century.[1] The belief was either the result or cause of several pretenders who posed as Nero leading rebellions.

Several variations of the legend exist, playing on both hope and fear of Nero's return. The earliest written version of this legend is found in the Sibylline Oracles.[2] It claims that Nero did not really die but fled to Parthia, where he would amass a large army and would return to Rome to destroy it.

Did he really die?

Also do you think this had an effect on people believing something like that now?

Not always...

One wonders if there was ever a documented case in history where they found and proved the celebrity in his new identity

Not a media celebrity, but here is a case where a former UK minister tried to fake his death and start a new life in Australia.

To be fair, out of the thousands of people who have become billionaires or world famous, surely one or two must have had the desire and means to succesfully fake their own death and go back to a life of obscurity with the freedom that comes from that and some of their stashed wealth.

JFK.

It makes people uncomfortable to acknowledge that the most powerful man in the world can have his head caved in by an ordinary man using a piece of metal the size of your baby toe. So we don't.

Similarly, it makes people uncomfortable to acknowledge that the richest, most famous, most learned, most accomplished, etc. can die as swiftly and easily as anyone else, because it means that none of those things we strive for make a difference. So, we don't.

Just turn off your phone and meditate on the fact that you're going to die and everyone who ever hears of you is going to die and eventually the last human will die and all the stories of our accomplishments will be written in languages nobody will ever understand unless they do and then they'll die too. Then you won't worry about celebrity deaths anymore.

I can agree with this, humans are as fragile as soap bubbles.

Permanence isn't the point Anon, permanence is an illusion we want to believe because it's comfortable, but that does not mean things are pointless mearly because it doesn't last.

Impermanence is permanent.
