Corll came before the fascination with this shit became massive. His story isn't at all glamourous like Bundy, nor had the element of Gacy being a public figure and the phenomena of his house being the burial site.
Corll's tale is just sad and fucking gross, despite Henley and Brooks' involvements being a rarity.
Plus he set the record for kills at the time, and as far as I am aware Houston would have been pretty keen to hush this shit away as much as possible due to all their staffing problems at the time

I find it fascinating though, that the defense never tried to use the young age of the boys and the fact that the boys were being bribed with large sums of money as ammo to receive below-max sentences. I mean, Brooks had known him since sixth grade, and according to the article considered Corll to be like a father figure. I think it's a pretty defensible position to claim that at least in Brooks case he had been "forced" to participate by Corll and that Brooks possibly even feared for his life should he try to distance himself from the situation.

I read up on cases like this in college for my psych classes. To me, what stands out about his history was the 3 failed marriages of his mother. What happens more than people think is that young boys raised by a single mother with no solid father figure do end up with homosexual ideations due to the activities and speech of the mother.

His time in the military reinforced those ideations as he was probably exposed to other young men, during basic and what-not, who likely made comments and opened Dean up to the idea of acting upon his feelings because they validated his repressed internal desires.

Initially, Dean likely tried to get the attention he sought through normal means (flirting, finally taking a boy out on a "date" and popping questions...etc) and when he was rebuffed, he became violent at the thought of someone exposing him, so he killed them.

It's still sort of a myth that ALL serial killers show signs. Not all do. And then you have the ones who did, but nobody noticed. His parents and teachers could have just been oblivious or in denial. Or, yet again, he could have been one of the few killers that are geniuses and know how to hide not only physically, but emotionally and psychologically. I.e. he knew how to restrain himself.

As far as serial killers go, ones like him are rare but not unheard of. He was at the very best a psychopath who understood what he was and knew how to restrain his urges. At worst he was just evil. One of the ~3% of the world population who are just born with something not right, that science can't really account for.
