What if religion was just an evolutionary trait?
Now, don't get me wrong I have very Limit knowledge about evolution, but I believe the gist of it is that over the generations, small mutations of the DNA results in a different 'final product'. Its goal is more or less just seeing what works to allow survival.
So, let's say humans have gone through all of the evolutionary steps to get the point before thought existed. Let's also say that there's a certain type of flower that was extremely abundant and also deadly when eaten, a strand of DNA was modified to cause an anxious feeling. Those with this feeling would live to create a generation of This worry has to be
I can't think about this longer, getting an existential crysis

Evolution isn't a guided process, it doesn't have any "goal" at all, it's random variations, the few that just happen to be useful or largely unimportant are passed on, eventually creating a new species.
