There's a difference between the ancient occult knowledge of learned societies, and primitive shadow-jumping superstition borne purely of a lack of understanding of the world around you.

I'm talking about African stuff you shitlord

Yes. Black magic a plenty. Let them fuck each other up and leave the civilised world out of it.

You just said the third world dumbshit.
Go to Tijuana
>>
>>19225598
Yeah, Afro systems are pretty sophisticated if you'd ever bother to take the time to learn about them.

I'd recommend thumbing through McNaughton's "A Bird Dance near Saturday City: Sidi Ballo and the Art of West African Masquerade" but I somehow doubt you could be bothered to read it.
>>
Thei magic gotta be well developed and effective given how well they prosper and how far their civilisations got. Really potent occult powers.

Yes,in everywhere there's a occult shit senpai.

This viewpoint stems from:
>having sex with a virgin is the for cure aids!
>crossdressing will confuse the enemies bullets and make you invincible in battle!

But other than that:
>Afro systems are pretty sophisticated
Is a fairly accurate statement.
>>
>>19226056
Please demonstrate to me how the Bird Dance, developed before the rise of modern HIV, stems from either HIV or the chaos in Liberia (especially considering Liberia is 200 miles from the Malian border, Mali being the focus of the ethnography). Please.

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to convey.

>This viewpoint stems from:
>having sex with a virgin is the for cure aids!
>crossdressing will confuse the enemies bullets and make you invincible in battle!

Meaning the common idea that Afro systems are nothing more than simplistic shadow jumping superstition, can be partially attributed to the above.

>Afro systems are pretty sophisticated
>Is a fairly accurate statement.
I thought this would have alleviated any confusion...

african voodoo and magic are based on superstition. in africa girls born on specific days are killed because its believed that become witches. also, beautiful women are considered magical and often end up being seen as oracles. african tribal magic is a 5,000 year old form of practice from a time when medicine was a piece of cow shit and a stick tied to a someones neck to keep evil away. but in terms of really horrifying occult happenings mexico has always had the satanic cults that kill people as sacrifices. same with other parts of south america except you get a lot of cannibalism. most of the stories about demonic possessions and evil spirits comes from areas of severely poor and are catholic. they don't have the understanding of most of the common mental illnesses and thanks to the church praying on their fears it has yet to change. look at russia and serbia. they have some serious shit going on there and a lot of people ignore it.

just the opposite, its more openly discusses or preformed because some of those places are like those mad max movies IRL and essentially lawless wastelands where anything goes.
there was a documentary on a special police task force in south Africa in the 90s that dealt with anything occult or witchcraft related because it was so prevalent then. So did you get to the part where they're talking about the liminality system of craft-magic and how to transfer it from crafter to object to viewer?

>>19227679
And what makes you think any given African system of initiation is less "learned" about their environment than the West? I mean, I can make the same sort of implication only in reverse, that the West doesn't have "learned" mystics because they can't differentiate between edible and poisonous species or have effective solo lion bowhunting techniques while West wastes its time on theoretical occult geometry.

It's just always amusing to me that Westerns like to give tribal occultists shit about their lack of knowledge when the Westerner can't even identify half the plants growing out the window or secure clean water in the savanna.

You're avoiding my question by focusing on regions.
>any given African
I didn't say anything about Africa.
>the West?
I didn't mention anything about the West.

Do you think that "learned societies" can only exist in Western culture?

>Westerns like to give tribal occultists shit about their lack of knowledge
But I didn't do this. At all. I purposefully left it as generic "learned societies." I never said or implied a tribal society was not learned. You are doing that.

Now please answer my question:
>would you not agree with the statement? That there is a difference between occult knowledge of learned societies, and superstition born of a lack of understanding about the world?
>>
>>19225554

Yes.

An untalked about element of it though comes from members of the elite western class, very wealthy, with occult interest, who wish a 'God' experience of sorts.

There are people who will spend vast sums of money in their personal fortunes, to be deified by the poorest, near stone age, third world residents that can be found. And there are many within this lucrative trade that assist them. It usually starts with missionary types, who 'scout out' a potential community of near primitives to assess their gullibility, if they are properly timid enough, isolated enough, malleable enough. Than a private security firm , i.e., mercenaries, comes to subjugate the community. Eventually the savior, i.e., client, comes and 'emancipates' the people. Or so this is generally the way it is done. The general result just is identify a suitable group, abuse that group, falsely 'free' that group with a leper messiah of sorts. Many than sink to utter debauchery, as they abuse the trust and reverence put in them by their victims.

The Etoro, or Edolo, are a tribe and ethnic group of Papua New Guinea. Their territory comprises the southern slopes of Mt. Sisa, along the southern edge of the central mountain range of New Guinea, near the Papuan Plateau.

They are well known among anthropologists because of ritual homosexual acts practiced between the young boys and men of the tribe. The Etoro believe that young boys must ingest the semen of their elders daily from the age of 7 until they turn 17 to achieve adult male status and to properly mature and grow strong.

The Etoro believe that they each contain a certain amount of life force, the highest concentrations of which are contained in semen. This life force passes to others through sexual relations. Women are seen to waste the life force if they do not get pregnant after sexual intercourse. As people get older, and their bodies weaken, this is attributed to a depletion of their life force.

Weird occult shit is generally "real", it's just that the people do it because they don't know better.

Lots of /x/ stuff shows up in the civilized world because there's not many threats left to ID, so people see/hear/believe things that don't exist.

1) I don't think I'm a genius.
2) I'm suggesting an entry level ethnography that I liked studying West African religious iconography for a year. If you want some other, potentially more difficult ethnography, I can recommend a small stack of 'em.

The functional difference is your amount of respect (or lack thereof) of the practices in question. I mean, I'm not the one who needs to substantiate that what the Ekpe initiatory sect does is fundamentally different from what the Freemasons do, that substantiation is on the person making the claim.

witch craft. Mexican here that used to live in bumfuck nowhere.
so my mom's grandpa was getting mocked by a talking huge turkey as he was burning wood for coal. so him being a brave man charges at it in the name of Jesus and stabs it with a pitch fork he had and throws it in the fire. the witch starts begging to stop it saying she is sorry and she has kids. my great-grandpa doesn't give a fuck but it slips away. next day they learned about a woman three towns over that has died due to fire and impaling wounds just like the witch he burned. shit is crazy over here man. okay so my dad when he was young he was a rebel and decided to go party to the next town over in a horse because family is poor af at night without my grandmas permission. my grandma being the vindictive woman trying to teach a lesson told my dad he was going to meet the devil for not listening to her and disrespecting the house rules. so my dad is done partying and is coming back to the house when he sees a three headed Rottweiler in front of him with red-eyes. my dad is scared shit less but the horse even more so and they high tail it all the way back to the house where the dog stops chasing them. my dad told my grandma what happened and my grandma starts crying because supposedly a mother's curse is the worst thing a mom can do to the son. the good thing is that my dad stopped being rebellious after that night.
another true story is about two brothers that decided to follow the noise of a pig and the piglets dragging a chain to the ground. this supposedly signifies that wherever the pigs go there's money or treasure. it was always heard by the people of the town but no one had the balls to follow them. anyways they follow the noise to where it stopped and sure enough they found a clay jar full of Mexican revolution gold coins. the first brother that opened the jar got hit by poison of the build up from the chemicals and died the second brother kept the gold and is still alive and rich as shit.
another story but of my village mystery lights. long story short there was an accident at this place leaving my village where a lil girl died with her family. after a month lights started appearing at the same spot where the accident happened from 8 pm till 2 am. and whenever people pass that spot you get chills. I have experienced the chills myself and I wasn't a supernatural believer
