Contrary to what most people think nasa did not create the technology to go to the moon , they just assembly everything

The rocket engines were from rocketdyne
The lunar module from Grunman
The command module from North america aviation

The saturn v inside was produced by boeing and two other companies.

When you check all of those companies except boeing no longer exist (grunman does but was anexed to other).

So nasa ordered in the 60s enough stuff for a period of 3 years and nothing more , in fact they did not even use the rockets and lunar modules for the last two planed landings apollo 18 and 19 , after landing 5 times and with a period of increasing solar flares nasa decided to stop there.

The lunar modules of apollo 18 and 19 were used in apolo soyuz and skylab.

But now there are no longer companies producing those stuff and even if they did the engineers that know the tech are dead or retired and even if that was not the case its old tech and no one would risk their careers pushing it.

You are right , nasa could create a modern lunar landing system in fact bush pushed for it it was called the "constellation program" it included everything you are saying and in fact even better they were going to use a rocket that was an hybrid using shuttle parts.

So instead of having a colosal saturn v it was going to be something smaller that could have solid boosters atached for lunar missions , and using it without it for smaller missions.

After all the problem of apollo was that the saturn v was colossal and having 10000 employes just to mantain a production line of a launch per year was insane.

While the constellation program was fucked up , the rocket for a lunar landing is still in development in the form of the SLS rocket , and the command module is also in development in the form of the orion capsule.

But nasa has the lower budget in decades even if trump increased it so its going to be in development and maybe a manned crew will be launcher in 2020 to the moon but not with landing again since the new lunar module called altair was killed by the obama government.

In addition to that, any "living in space" experiments or studies we could have are easier and more affordable to execute at the ISS than on the moon.

It takes a shit ton of money to get to the moon, and a shit ton of training. I believe we'll go back someday, but it will almost be like a novelty or a drill/exercise before launching some larger, more elaborate or dangerous launch (such as to Mars).
