It's probably cursed in a placebo-effect kind of way, where they're lives become worse when they dwell on it more. People on /r9k/ obsess on negative thoughts, to the point where they poison their life with it.

I think negativity is highly contagious, not only during discussions with other negative people but also sort of psychicly, but lately I've been wondering if this also works through the internet. It kind of is but there's nothing paranormal about it. Man is a social animal and as such he finds company by his peers comforting because of his safety-in-numbers instict. In the case of psychology peers are people feeling the same way. /r9k/ is a pit where losers congregate and enjoy some empathy. It's comfy and dulls the pain a little.

Thing is, your situation doesn't change, meaning you're still in perpetual internal turmoil. But because you've found a tiny measure of comfort, you're loathe to change. And change fucking hurts even if it's for the best.
Furthermore, everyone's moaning about the same thing normalizes your mindset and you stop thinking that it's your personal problem and therefore the solution is in your hands. Thus you achieve a sort of learned helplessness.
Finally, because /r9k/ is so homogenous (same kind of people with the same kind of unsolved problem), there are no sucess stories to learn from or different approaches to try.

In short, when you're feeling down you are drawn to your likes, while you should be seeking the opposite.

I've not been to /r9k/ but from what I'm reading here it feels a lot like the group of people I used to hang out almost exclusively with online. Everytime I tried breaking the circlejerk of sadness by being positive I was shunned and made to feel bad for it, so I left the group. I'd rather not be part of a group at all as I am now than be part of something that will take my clinical depression and just make it worse as opposed to helping me beat it.
