If these were Jpegs the answer is most likely that damage caused by radiation has screwed up some of the bits/bytes on the storage media and this caused errors in the jpeg file.
It takes time but it happens. Ive had old programs saved on disks for 4+ years and ill go to reinstall or unzip them and I get a CRC error because its been (literally) damaged.
JPEG is incredibly vulnerable to this kind of damage and especially if it happens in the Header that will destroy the image completely, such as the one in your OP picture.
Other files can be damaged like that too but thats Usually whats going on with an image that wont load, or has parts of it missing.
