I honestly think Franz Anton Mesmer tapped into the same force that Jesus used (namely, "animal magnetism"). I was reading a biography of Mesmer which mentioned that even a skeptic hoping to disprove Mesmer had his chronic stomach ailment cured by him. Without any seeming shame or embarrassment at all, the biography casually asserts that "In his subconscious mind, he must have had more faith in the cure than he consciously had!"

Now, Mesmer may not have been right down to every single detail. But I think he was an honest person who found out something very interesting, perhaps one of the most significant discoveries of modern times if it had been accepted (comparable to, say, the switch to geocentrism, Newton's laws of gravity, and Einstein's theories of general and special relativity), but instead the medical profession was jealous of him and hated him so threw all they had against him so hard that even today we just think he was a fraud.
