I'm not suggesting a cultural cross-polination, but Greco-Buddhism lends credence to the notion that the western world was formally conscious of a mandala.

Rather, I was suggesting that all ancient cultures had some form of computer (I Ching,) and that metal-using cultures could make gear-work computers to do their astronomy calculations for them. The gear might have arisen as a means of linking multiple celestial processions together - simply establish a standard unit of measure, and orally record the dimensions of the 'celestial gears' and the number of teeth each had. Later generations, totally ignorant of the math involved, could make computers that predicted vital seasonal information. The dimensions and number of gears would become the roots of numerology and sacred geometry.

The gears could be painted and aesthetically carved, so that large quantities of theological information would be layed out in dynamic, interactive order. When used in a Golem, they would need to be made out of bronze or copper.
