I was having a discussion about this yesterday with some friends. From what I understand, autism itself isn't necessarily understood enough to the degree as other mental health issues. Because the classification for autism became wider, and now autism is classified a spectrum, all the way from low functioning autists who repeat the same words all day and bang their heads against walls, to high functioning autists who are only antisocial and lack social skills, to math geniuses or piano masters as autistic savants. i don't know about scientific studies, but my wife has been a teacher for a decade and the ratio of kids diagnosed with autism, not to mention other IEP needs has absolutely doubled in the over that time alone

classes in this area average 20-30 kids
10 years ago maybe 2 to 4 would be IEP ( aka special ed)

today its at least 6 per classroom

so either learning disabilities are heavily on the increase, or today we label a kid the moment they stare at a wall for 5 minutes
