Basically - if you want to live on with your ancestors, you have to keep supplying them with good karma. The moment the younger generations stop giving offerings, the souls of the ancestors can no longer remain in Pitriloka and must return to lower material realms.

For a visual, Pitriloka is considered part of the Bhuvar-loka planetary systems, or the heavenly realms just above Earth.
