what's the best horror game I can get on steam?

Fatal Frame 2 is legit the spookiest game I personally have played. Even the whole background soundtrack is really fucking haunting.
And it doesnt even have jump scares and its an easy game.

What's so scary about System shock 2, I've never played it but it doesn't sound that scary?

It's not scary. It's just creepy. Constant enemy respawns and complete disregard for human life /might/ keep you on edge, but it's only as creepy as Bioshock. Maybe more so depending on your phobias.

Calling is a pretty underrated game even with some of its problems.
It has this loveable vibe that always attracts me to it.

Not scary but is anyone else looking forward to Secret World Legends? I loved TSW. Hoping the relaunch and f2p will go smoothly.

Anyone here remember an ascii art horror game? It takes place in a house and every night the mother wakes up to someone screaming and the screen starts to go crazy. Someone on youtube made a more artistic version of the events but I cant for the life of me remeber what it's called.

All the time. The first time I played Silent Hill, my mom actually randomly had it one day. She was addicted to it (thought it was hilarious that he would fall off porches), but we didn't have a memory card, so we just left the Playstation running for a day or two at a time.

I think the original game has reached cheese levels that are too high to make it scary.
The jumpscares still work, yes - and fuck those dogs - but I think the remake for gamecube would have more impact atmosphere-wise nowadays.

It gave me some spoops. I never ended up finishing it though. Probably more because of my ADD tendencies when playing games.

[spoiler]I wish I was joking but the FNAF series. I understand why some might hate it, and the sequels are all meh, but the original game is horror kino imo.[/spoiler]

are there any good atmospheric horror games? looking more for stuff like metro/stalker but all they seem to make now are hide in a closet walking sims (f*ck amnesia and what it did to "horror" games)

Pretty crap list OP to be honest. Or rather, the rankings are way the fuck off. Pathologic is shit, not scary. Nice White day mention tho.

Silent hill 3 is still the scariest game for me, but not my fav. That's SH2.

Haunting Ground is an honorable mention for surreal and panic horror. Also the main girl is hot AF. Also on that note, Rule of Rose.

Also seconding Siren and Fatal Frame. Japanese horror in a Japanese setting has a special something about it.

I first played this game in 1997, I was 11 years old. It scared the fuck out of me. those camera angles would give me the creeps, all the cinematic parts were scary, just the overall feel of the game was nothing like Id ever experienced in a video game. it was almost mind blowing back in the 90s, and you know what? Its still a great game even with the sub par voice acting. I dont think that takes away from how scary the game is.
Also the part in the game where you find a scientist that hung himself in the bathroom, then when you exit and hear him fall down, I turned the fucking game off and it took me a while to play it again. Horror games seem so much more genuine and hard hitting when youre a kid.
