Religion was evolutionarily useful until very recently. It helps cement an in-group identity, even with a multi-ethnic polity (i.e. bronze- and iron-age empires). It helps people persist in brutal, dangerous worlds where early death is likely and even basic undertakings are often doomed to failure, because a person who believes that everything is unfolding according to some all-wise divine plan is less likely to become terminally discouraged when their first four children die in infancy.

Now that surviving into old age is the norm rather than the exception, and the bounty of modern technology has rendered famine and social collapse but a distant memory in much of the world, religion is losing its evolutionary utility, which is part of why it is being discarded.

Fundamentalism can be seen as a reaction to this action. Not, as it's often incorrectly assumed, as old habits persisting into modernity, but rather a thoroughly modern re-interpretation of what it means to be religious. Whether this will end up functioning on the religious mind-virus' 'immune system' by destroying modern civilisation and bringing religion back into the norm, remains to be seen.
