Mark Twain was in the Middle East, a local offered to show him the well that Joseph of Many Colored Coat fame was tossed in. Twain paid the man and was lead to a flat piece of earth.

"This is the well," said the Man. Twain pointed out that it looked like a flat piece of land to him.

"Alas, it's the tourists," said the man. "They come, see the famous well and even when warned not to they take a bit of the hole away with them as a souvenir. After a while there was no hole in the ground left. But this is where it was."

Twain was seriously impressed.
