one of the first things on motion picture was a train coming towards the canera. People in the theatre were baffled and were expecting a train to burst out of the screen and run them all over because they'd never seen a movie before.

Similarly, in the 60s, people got spooked by this because they didn't know what it was back then. Kodak authenticated the pictures as untampered which means that whatever was on the picture was actually there, and back then they couldn't exactly open it in photoshop to add contrast to the picture.
