The "greys" that have become the common concept of what aliens look like is due to the crash at Roswell.
It was a crash test dummy (before crash test dummy's were common).
The engineer who designed it was afraid that if the unmanned aircraft crashed, a farmer or someone would be injured , or even killed, attempting to rescue what he believed was a human pilot.
So the engineer designed it to have physical dimensions that wouldn't be mistaken for a person (small body, skinny arms and including a huge head with eyes so it wouldn't look like a helmet) but still close enough to human parameters to record viable data.
The engine the aircraft was testing was the one used by chuck Yeager to break the sound barrier a couple months later. But the public was not told about the sound barrier being broken for years- not until the russians built a bomber capable of attacking the U.S. mainland. Only then did we let the world know we had the capability of intercepting anything in the air.
The "alien" conspiracy was just by chance born out of civilian witnesses of the crash and the military ran with it- it was a perfect coverup for one of the most secret programs at that time.
BTW, the original crash test dummy at Roswell was painted neon orange, but it was burned off in the fire that resulted from the crash. SciFi movies would have been much cooler if it would have stayed intact instead of the charred color...

And f you ever get clearance, the Roswell dummy is sitting at the check-in desk at area-51. He's become a long running joke there.
