Mary is also a descendant of David. Her genealogy is in Luke. Her father's name is Heli. She descends from David through Nathan, the priestly line. She can also inherit as she has no brothers and married within her tribe.

So Jesus, the adopted son of Joseph, heir to David through Solomon, the kingly line, yet cursed by being descended from Jeconiah, had no claim to the throne.

But because Jesus is not biologically related to Joseph, he does have that claim, and will exercise it.
