What does /x/ think about numbers stations? What the hell are they?
I'm especially intrigued by UVB-76: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UVB-76

part of the russian dead hand system to launch their nukes, and also used to covertly send simple coded instructions to clandestine receivers.

Number stations is experimental noise but I don't think you'd be able to understand it. It takes pretty defined taste.

This pretty much, basically just relics from the cold war

Nah. One time pads are secure as fuck, you are right about clandestine shit because you just need a shortwave radio and the pad. But the Russkis still use it to organize their military operations in a routine way (part of this no doubt is the sheer size of Russia).
You will note that a few years ago the main Russian numbers station actually changed sites (in fact moved to three different sites). Some guys actually looked around the old site after decommissioning. If you google a little bit you can also find the odd talk about it from Russian exmil people. Nothing major, just that it is used by the Russian military regularly.

I wonder how much it would have cost to hire the facility and broadcast on the amateur bands like that,

This topic is not /x/ related. But anyways..
Listened casually since 1985; and used to track & rdf them from 1992-1995 in conjunction with other swl's. Was surprised to find many of them originating from a US Army signalling school Stateside.
Lots of Mossad, Chinese, & Cuban number stations in CW & computer synthesized female voice (often in spanish).
All clearly 1 time pads.
UVB-76, I recall hearing it a couple of times in the late 80's but never paid much attention to it, desu. It was never strong into western Canada. Not sure what to think as all the theories surrounding its purpose can be shot down with the simplest arguments. It reminds me of a channel marker or interval signal.

>op's pic
Wow... I haven't seen horn antenna's since 1993 and we took ours out of service in 1990 and even then it was only used as a backup path if the fibre line were to fail.
bumpin for intradast

Number stations are a good way to get messages to people, anyone can receive them with just a simple radio, but the receiver won't draw any attention to themselves while receiving.
I ran one in my junior year of high school, was pretty fun running to different corners of the school and listening to random numbers, I kinda want to start another one but I don't have a lisense or the capability to broadcast more than a 100 yards.

>mysterious government radio stations broadcasting random numbers

You're an idiot.

/x/ these days is nothing but roleplayers and schizophrenics jerk each other off over absolutely retarded shit, no more room for stuff like number stations anymore.
