Here's a very crude layout of my apartment.

For the last 2 nights, around midnight, my door has been rattling by itself. I'll admit that the hinge and latch are a little loose, but it's never done this before. For example, if you press on the door while it's closed, the lock will bang up against the side panel and make a small "thud". If you've ever had a loose door, you'll know what I'm talking about.

It's been banging very fast, like a sped up heartbeat, for the last two nights and I can find no reason for it. At first I thought it was a cat leaning up against the door scratching itself... last night I tried to debunk it thinking it may have been a pressure draft, but all the windows are closed and there are no drafts in the apartment. I've listened to it for a while to try and discern if there's some kind of sentient pattern to it, but any analysis came back inconclusive.

I can't explain this. What do?

Where do you live? It's been pretty cold in some areas lately and it could just be your heater kicking on. Used to happen sometimes at a family member's house.

I keep the heat off to save on electricity, that stuff isn't cheap.
San Diego. We just got over a cold spell and it's creeping back up into the 70s, no need for a heater or AC. Very temperate weather.

Get a cheap Bluetooth camera, connect to a PC, install dorgem (might've spelt it wrong) and point it at your door, telling it to record based on motion.
>>
In order to debunk structural causes, there's a ton of info needed.
My only advice, wedge a boot against the door. Yell at it if it persists.
But then again, if it stops when you yell there might be a real issue.

I've taken to wedging a sock beneath the door to keep it from shaking, but I'll attempt verbal communication next time it happens--tomorrow night, if it has been anything like the last two nights. Doesn't feel hostile, just attention grabbing.

If only you knew what the real "sector 8" meant.

Poor, poor ignorant civilian.
