Here is the topography which shows that there is something called 'Battle Creek Mines' in that exact area which is a mining operation that was in service from 1944-46

Forget sloth monsters. Abandoned mines in the west are prone to collapse and often infested with plague rats. If OP explored abandoned mines as often as he claimed (without a buddy no less), he's clearly not the brightest bulb in the box.

I feel that if there's no trespassing signs then you're free to explore.
If there is then I'd say you should limit your time there depending if there's houses nearby and how far you are from town.
But if things come from me legally I'd say you're allowed to defend yourselves unless you're on someone's property and they have dogs out there to keep people out. Then I'd advise you all to have brass catchers and to not leave anything behind and to have something bigger than a 5.56 just because if they are cryptids running after you, it'd be beneficial to be shooting something heavier than a 223 just to jar them enough to knock them off balance as they run to give yourselves more of a lead if you have to run and the buckets aren't too effective against them
