An altar isn't strictly required for magic, but a lot of people like to use them. They're very convenient if you're using a lot of ritual tools/props/etc.

All altars, spells, sigils, rituals, and et cetera are unnecessary. They all exist within your consciousness, which is the only reality. What you become conscious of being or having will externalize in your world: appropriate the feeling of having your perfect girlfriend and live in the emotional state you'd have if you were already with her. Fall asleep feeling her next to you, listening to her breathe, feeling the warmth of her skin. Know and feel that it is already done: you cannot see her yet, but on a higher dimensional level she is already with you, and it will be so.

Magic doesn't work because the act of doing magic for a thing is a statement that you don't have what you want. Only when you incorporate the feeling of the wish fulfilled into your spell will it work, and if you do that, you don't need the magic part. You're doing magic with every thought anyway.

anytime you think you might need something in a ritual, or it feels like you need it, use it. altars are good. not everybody uses them, but they help you focus. when I started I used shit tons of symbols - candles, coloured cloth, drawn pictures, herbs, all that. as time went by I needed it less. now a lot of it would seem superfluous and get in the way. I'd probably still use an altar, but it'd be simpler.

use your intuition. if you're not sure what your intuition is telling you, getting more ritual experience will help. an attraction spell is a fairly harmless way to do that. just watch out for crazies.

Well first off, witchcraft doesn't have to be interlaced with religion, and following that logic, you don't need an altar. You can use any spell you want, and you can modify it to fit your beliefs.

Now in my experience, spells you write yourself work the best, but before you even get to that, there's something else you need to address, and that is the kind of magic you want to use. There's candle magic, herb magic, sigils... it's quite the list really, but before you even get to actually casting, you should not only do a fair bit of research, but also practice energy manipulation for a bit because it really makes a difference when you're able to feel the energy moving through you when casting. Now the reason why I'm telling you to do all this is to increase the chances of it actually working, because it doesn't really matter what kind of spell you have, what matters is the person doing it, and every one can, you just need to know how.

I got nothing, and honestly trying that would be a waste of time. I don't know of anyone who does magic through sheer willpower, I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying your legs need to reach the pedals before you learn how to drive. You don't know how to focus intent yet, placebos, as you put it are going to be hard enough for you. Chances are if you try not using anything you'll end up wasting a bunch of energy and accomplishing nothing.

Well, there really is no "should", it really depends on what you want to learn. Unblocking your chakras will really help develop any innate abilities you have. The book I gave delves into that a little bit but it does sort of go along with energy manipulation.

The attraction spells I have found didn't really fit what I wanted so I've used my own, but it feels a bit too personal for me to share.
You can write your own spell to fit exactly what you want, regardless of whether you're a beginner or not.
