We aren't "controlled" but we are set into lanes which we must follow. Most people don't even see the lane and assume they're making their own choices, others can see the lanes and either kill themselves or choose to accept the fact that they are not as free as they thought they were, and a few lucky people can not only see the lanes but have something that allows them to step over the lanes and choose their own path.

In short, you're free to chose between a big mac and a whooper but you're still going to be eating fast food at the end of the day.

The big problem with this kind of thing is that it ignores how absolutely finicky and whiny people are. No matter how good we have it we constantly want things to be even better. No matter how free we are we want to be freer. We'll absolutely never be happy or satisfied because contentment is the antithesis of our nature.

Lets say for the sake of argument that some force was able to solve the issues of racism. sexism, and religious intolerance and create a truly united humanity for its own ends. It would have to continue to improve the quality of life semi regularly by massive amounts every single year or people would start to get bored, crazy, and angry.

People are just too petty, stupid, and angry for this kind of thing to ever work
