Everything you see has always been flat to begin with. You've never seen depth, you just imagine it. The light receptors in your eyes are distributed on a 2D surface, and they have no way to "know" how far the light they see has traveled from its latest source. That knowledge (which can easily be false - e.g. try telling how far stars are by looking at them) comes from a brain process that literally is an illusion, not from the raw visual data.
