ironically for anything spiritually dangerous to affect you it could not do so without becoming material and thus mortal (and therefor will try not to), so your best way of protecting yourself is being grounded in your body and keeping it healthy (remembering the whole healthy mind in a healthy body thing)

Depends on where you ground yourself.

If you want to be a good little Christian and have God protect you, holy water and crosses and that sort of thing will protect you, along with the armor of God. But that only works if you go the whole nine yards with honest intentions; you can't fake your way into salvation, you have to pray and participate in Christianity with sincerity. Most monotheistic religions that offer protection will require the same.

If you prefer to ground yourself from inside, may I suggest you look into Wiccan circle of protection. A lot of pagan religions have circles that act as sort of shields, but Wicca seems to be the most readily accessible. But hey, it has its own code of conduct and rules. So be smart about about it. Something like Wicca (I can't speak for other pagan religions, sorry) emphasizes self empowerment through the Goddess, where as monotheism emphasizes reliance on the power of God. It depends on whether you trust yourself or an outside force more.

Also, just don't mess with anything that seems too willing to assist you, because it could be a trap from a negative spirit, or anything that gives you bad vibes. In a lot of cases you'll also want to bring a friend, depending on what you plan on doing.
