Anyone have suggestions for legitimately scary movies? Our place's list is a little shit right now
>>
>>18198944
What type of horror r u looking for op?
>>
>>18198954
Psychological horrors are ones I usually like. Stuff like that or typical zombie or crazed mad man.
Just throw whatever out there
>>
>insidious

Yeah I have 2 roommates, one uses chive lel
>>
Audition, Martyrs, let the right one in, REC, and for something just generally fucked up go with Visitor Q
>>
In The Mouth Of Madness.
More like a psychological thriller. The type of shit that'll fuck with your head.

The Bad Seed
Considering the films age, the way it's script is delivered it's somewhat eerie.

Begotten.
Incredibly disturbing black and white imagery.

Videodrome.
For being aged, the movie is again another psychological thriller. Only this one is notorious for being somewhat trippy and a bit gory for it's time. Genuinely good, somewhat creepy film.

Kazaam!
Shaq's acting skills are terrifyingly bad
>>
The Exorcist, Exorcist III
>>
The forest
>>
The Mist is alright.
>>
John Carpenter's The Thing
John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness

And you really can't go wrong with Halloween and Halloween II either. Just don't watch any of the other ones. Except maybe Season of the Witch. That was not a bad movie, but it has nothing at all to do with Michael Myers.
>>
Thirding Mouth of Madness, one of my top favorite horror movies. Check out Cigarette Burns if you are looking for something else like it too.

Martyrs was quite disturbing and I would only recommend watching it by yourself, though I did like it.

Throwing in Drag Me to Hell if you want something a bit more lighthearted too.
>>
>>18198944
>Scary Movie-thon!!!
>A Clockwork Orange
Did I shift into a timeline where that's a scary movie?
>>
The Shining is a classic that has psychological elements and it really creeped me out when I first saw it. It's pretty long though.

Also, John Carpenter's The Thing is really scary and deals with paranoia in an isolated setting.

It Follows was actually pretty good too.

If you are looking at it as an adaptation of the book, it's horrifying.
>>
It Follows
Definitely one of the scarier movies to come out in recent years. Watched it high as fuck in theatres when it came out and I was paranoid for the next week.
>>
>>18200200
the film might not have been executed all that well but I agree that the concept of the story and the thing that follows is probably one of the best anxiety based horror films in recent years.

Subtly taking a very basic old horror element such as the "non-fatiguing antagonist in constant pursuit"(disregarding speed) like say Zombies or the Terminator and turning it into a slow burning, tension building horror element was fantastic. What's so good about the film is the surprise you get that it was never done this way, before now.

Awesome soundtrack too.
>>
Blair witch project (1999)
Hush (2016)
Inbred (2012)
>>
>>18198944
Watched The Blackcoat's Daughter the other day and it surprised me with how good it was. Really atmospheric slow burn horror with some genuinely weird, offbeat scenes.

They Look Like People is one of the best horror movies I've seen in years, and is extremely /x/ related, what with its whole conspiracy theory plot. Super unnerving visuals.

Insidious is pretty underrated desu, I mean its not perfect... or "good" but it had some genuinely spooky moments.
>>
It Follows and The Witch are the two best horror movies to come out in a long time.

I also recommend Trick R' Treat. It isn't very scary but it's still a really good movie.
>>
Shit that I like that I consider legitimately good:

The Thing
The Descent
Insidious
The Witch
Mockingbird
Creep
It Follows
I Saw The Devil (Korean)
Funny Games
Last House on the Left (2009)
[REC]
Eden Lake
In Fear
Drag Me To Hell
The Collector
The Pact
At The Devil's Door
I Spit On Your Grave (2010)
>>
Contracted. Serious body horror, necrophilia, and flesh-eating STDs. Only horror movie that I had to take a break from and go outside for some fresh air.
>>
>People recommending V/H/S

Is this a meme, or is the movie sincerely praised around here?

I finally watched it after seeing it get mentioned all over the place, and it kinda fell flat overall. The concept of the film is fantastic, but the general execution is kinda bland. It frequently feels cliche as fuck without being fun or celebratory about it.

>>18205999
>Trick R' Treat

Yeah, this might be the most fun I've had with a horror movie. It's like a more modern take on The Creep Show. High recommendation for both movies.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned The Poughkeepsie Tapes yet. Some of the acting is kinda mediocre, but I think it manages to be generally competent enough to warrant a watch.

Also seconding everyone that mentioned Noroi.

Pretty horrible
>>
>>18207520
Oh shit, thanks for reminding me.

You should also check out The Babadook. It seems like there's been some blowback against the movie as a reaction to the overwhelming flood of praise it received. I've also seen people criticize it for being "manipulative" or "dishonest" with its premise, since its more of a psychological horror than a monster/ghost movie.

Either way, there's a reason people have been making a fuss over it. It's probably not the best horror movie you've ever seen, but it's a damn good one.
>>
New blair witch spooked me
>>
>>18198944

I thought "the martyrs" was pretty scary and mindfucky kind of movie.
>>
The original Poltergeist was pretty fucking scary/unsettling.

My favourite "horror" is 'A Tale of Two Sisters', although it's not very scary. More a mindfuck.

>They Look Like People

My man. I saw this a couple months back and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. A bit of a slow build but the shots where it was just one of the people staring directly at the camera were unnerving as hell. A solid 7/10 movie I'd say.
>>
>>18200081

Watching a child trapped in the care of a well-intentioned
yet dangerously mentally ill
parent is extremely effective to me. Probably since its a realistically tragic/frightening thing that can happen with some families.

It's part of the reason why I thought Unedited Footage of a Bear is so wonderful.
