It's hereditary.
At least it was for me, my family has taken care of black cats since I can remember. We own a lot of land and nobody notices our cats can't die from normal means because we live in bumfuck nowhere. Not everyone in my family has been blessed by them however. Witches jump usually between one or two generations.
Only the women can be witches but men in my family have other methods and are born with other blessings such as magnificent strenght.
Our familiars don't die by natural cause. People here haven't really noticed about our cats being immortal because they are all black and look like the most common cats ever. They wander around but people know they shouldn't mess with them. Forgot to say, but you can kill them like any other cat, you will just set up a curse upon you.
But if you never touch them or do anything to them they will never die, they also don't age but they eat and hunt like any normal cat.
A friend of mine once said she felt eerie whenever my cat was around. She is sensitive to spirits and I guess I just got used to it.
Black cats usually bring good luck.
But yeah, that's how it runs in my family. For some reason though you should never by any means reveal the name of your cat to other people. It is meant to be passed from granmother to grandaugther and never ever break the chain.
My grandmother said we used to have so much more of them but now we only have 8.
They also don't get along with normal cats.

You could start by learning the cats language, do you know what ear and tail positions mean? Do you know what the different types of eye (non)contact and winks and blinks can mean?
How about the different way it ripples its back or tail?

You learn the cats language and find one whos responsive to you talking back to it in the right way and you can communicate very very intricately with it.
