Many people with such conditions sometimes can't cope with live on their own. Animals that aren't in captivity with these illnesses would surely die, much like the human with them can't integrate into normal society fully.

Just understand that what is and isn't considered "mental illness" goes in and out of fashion about as quickly as hairstyles, and depending on what leadership a region in the world has.

Call them mental configurations, meaning the sum of all ways a person can rationalize their reality. They go in and out of fashion all the time. It's called "dogma."

The ability to control people's belief systems by use of dogma is one of the most ancient, forms of magic, because it's equivalent to controlling their physical bodies with your mind. It's just very complicated, and not so easy as waving a wand, and telling them what to do.

A lot of them are altered states of consciousness but that's not /just/ what they are.

Maybe hundreds of years ago, but information has been written down and it has been studied so that we now define this as mental illness

The altered state of consciousness is just a tool to keep certain parts of your psyche compartmentalized. It can be, for instance, be difficult to shop for food at the grocery store when you are experiencing everyone's thoughts in a 20m radius as echoes.

But, it can be useful if you wish to have a 1 on 1 mental connection with a person in the privacy of your own home. And so, altered states of consciousness are used to activate or deactivate certain spiritual directories by use of physical props.

You still need to learn the actual skills / knowledge for what it is you wish to do.

There are some mental illnesses that seem similar to altered states, but this is because said states are induced by TEMPORARILY shutting off or overexciting parts of the nervous system, either through voluntary control or by chemical induction. Mental illnesses on the other hand are more permanent and fully out of the control of the individual.

So while there is some overlap between what's experienced in altered states and mental illnesses, the key difference is that the person who's in the altered state can get out of it.

As for magical potential, successfully using altered states in the practice of magic requires rigorous training, usually so that the magician can be in such a state but fully in control of their own consciousness. A mentally ill person achieving this is highly unlikely.
