So, what's up with the signal from HD 164595? Results from SETI will be presented in September. Is it something? Type II civilisation? Or just a satelite crossing the telescope?

Maybe the transmission is a response to us like in contact, which as written by carl sagan. Since the signal was recieved in 2015 and we recieved by a transmission source 98 lys awaay, perhaps we should ask what happened 99 years ago in radio?

>1919: First clear transmission of human speech, (on 9XM) after experiments with voice (1918) and music (1917).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_radio
>>
it was a ping test.

wait another 90 whatever years.
>>
>>18084134
But it would take 99 years to travel back. So look at what happened 99×2 years ago
>>
Actually we just should send the same signal as an answer ... just in case.
>>
>>18082906
CNN posted a really humiliating article calling us all tin foilers and that we would all burn our mouths on hot pizza like George Noory. Oh man, they really got us good.
>>
the farthest an alien could see our first radio signals and respond to them would be about 60-65 light years away. this corresponds to the first radio signal tests done in late 1800s cut in half for the return trip of a response.
>>

>But it would take 99 years to travel back. So look at what happened 99×2 years ago

nothing from here, but what to say an alien civilization wouldn't have the ability to send a message in superlight speed, or send it through a micro-wormhole, so they send it almost immediately, and it pops up out of a micro wormhole nearby, making the second set of scientists here believe that it was a local signal after all. the russians were right, like always.
>>
>>18084833
>super lightspeed
... ehm, no.
>>
Oh look "it's fucking nothing."
>>
I'm a little bit freaked out right now but I saw a movie in 2014 where aliens send a signal on 11ghz and it was captured by the ratan 600 telescope and on the same date I guess but 2013. Then the story went something about aliens were 4th dimensional and manipulated somehow mankinds memory. oO wtf

name of the movie anon?

I don't know the name anymore and it's not in the previews unfortunately. But it was named after some classical music piece, from Beethoven or the like .. some ouverture I think.

one of these I guess

someone ask on /sci/ how high the chances for someting like this are.
>>

Ludicrous speed.
>>
>>18086411
Maybe the filmmakers send the signal to the Ratan as a marketing gag. Still more likely than extra-terrestrians or future prediction.
>>
>>18082906
Type II civs have most likely already met aliens, so they wouldn't care a single lick about us, so it's not that.
>>
>>18086503
They've gone to plaid.
>>
The current theory is that it was a military satellite.

The scientists checked the locations of known satellites and found none in the search area, but being top secret and what not, military satellites couldn't have been on the list they checked.
>>
>>18088226
Addendum: plus also the signal was in the military band.
>>
>>18084833
They can transfer information at super light speed but only ping us. Hmm...
>>
>>18085045
It does not mention a year.
>>
>>18084938
Certainly not with that attitude
>>
>>18088262
And? How many Fridays 15th May do exist you think?
>>
It got shut down pretty hard across the news, based on nothing but a SETI@home forum post. Nice scientific method.
>>
>>18089802
news are not scientific. also it seems to be the believe that when even a seti i-want-to-believer does not get crazy it cannot be anything.

How to confirm the film was made before 2015? Gotta find it again, m8.

What if it was just something boring and shitty, like an intergalactic sales call from the India planet? I wonder how nasa would break the news to us
>>
>>18090961
imdb: tt3984200
clearly says 2015
>>
>>18091088
Okay so this is NASA.
ET's contacted us with a short signal. Later they explained via radio that they've got the wrong number.

Public: So there is an intergalactic federation of highly intelligent beings?

NASA: Yes indeed there is.

Public: So Aliens come to earth?

NASA: No, they've just got the wrong number

Public: So we will visit?

NASA: We don't even have the possibilities to find them
Just the sheer knowledge about how uninportant we are to ET's could stun the whole world.
>>
>>18090596

>implying that seti@home isn't a clearinghouse of disinfo
>>
>>18091139
it's not that we're unimportant, it's that the universe is far too large and intelligent life is rare beyond comprehension.
>>
>>18091194
Idk, is it?

Anyhow people are quick in assuming ETs but even quicker in calling weather ballon.
>>
>>18084134
this, >>18084325 , and that signal would be waaaay too weak anyhow.
>>
>>18091132
No, it's clearly 2014, you nut. Lrn2read. The movie was released before the signal was detected.
>>
>>18084833
Agreed. Although this notion is not one we should take seriously, it is still one we have to take into consideration. It is foolish to assume our technological limitations are universal and insurmountable, just because we have yet to find a way to overcome them. Perhaps this civilization has "Ansible"-level communication abilities, perhaps this signal originated from another civilization and this is all just coincidence, perhaps this signal isn't from any sentient civilization at all, it's merely a result of some astronomical event we haven't yet encountered. There are many possible theories here with varying levels of probability, the important thing, however, is taking all of them into account without letting bias askew our judgement.
>>
>>18092024
The IMDb entry can be flawed. The claim on the website can be false. Everything more likely than that they predicted future.
>>
>>18082954

In contrast to the knee-jerk forum post shitting on the observation which is being taken as authoritative, SETI is actually investigating while controlling expectations.

http://www.seti.org/seti-institute/a-seti-signal

So make of that what you will, it's not so cut and dried as the neckbeard forum poster made out.
>>
>>18082906
But in all seriousness do you really believe if they found something the government would allow them to tell anyone about it?
>>
>>18093724
well, the archive on the website of the festival where the film was premiered cannot be false also. 2014 is confirmed. and 'cause so, the film ACTUALLY predicted a 11ghz signal catched with ratan 600 telescope at Fr May 15th 2015. .. as weird as it sounds ..
>>
>>18082954

If that guy's shutdown were true, why did SETI continue looking into the signal? What's that guy's agenda?
>>
>>18084938
How dare you, Ill haveyou know that energy can move as fast as it wants if it wants to. It does -NOT- need a cis shitlord like you trying to useyour lightspeed privelege bullshit
>>
>>18094085
Didn't Putin say last year, or earlier this year, that if the West didn't tell the truth about aliens, Russia would?
>>
>>18084938
Not true anon. Energy or a particle can't move faster than the speed of light. This fact is true.

But if you take a HUGE pair of scissors.... maybe 3x10e5 km long... When you closed the scissors the intersection point between the two blades while propagate in space faster than the speed of light.
