Canon-wise, I understood why they looked like lumpy rotten flesh but it wasn't frightening (maybe it wasn't meant to be), but when the pure flood forms were revealed in the sequels where the design team had full license to go buck wild into making something terrifying, just meh. At least I find the nature and origin of the Flood to be one of the better attempts at Lovecraftian cosmic horror. You have to delve into the EU for that though.

There's only so much you can do with halo's original engine and I find the flood a valiant effort. scared my 6 year old self anyway. I think they go more for the overwhelming odds sort of horror rather than their aesthetic. Then again the marine helmet cutscene does make it seem like they did want that 'horror' atmosphere which in retrospect didn't exactly work. Whatever the case, the lovecraftian ties to the nature of the flood as a whole is pretty cool.

I've had multiple dreams throughout my life out of fucking nowhere that feature him, are super detailed and cogent, and are deeply terrifying

The most recent one me and a group of friends got the general feeling that a run-down laboratory-factory type building downtown was housing him, so we went in with the full intent of finding and killing him. I kept trying to remind everyone that he'd try to throw us off, or play us against each other, or pick us off one by one.

Eventually as we got deeper into the plant, we decided to take a break in an office room to try to regroup ourselves because the sense of evil was getting stronger. When we walked in, there was already a guy there waiting. He told us that he and his company were trying to start the plant back up, and asked us if we were looking for work. I seemed to be the only one in the group who was suspicious of his sudden unassuming appearance, but for some reason his spell disarmed me too and I eventually caved. I figured we could work for his company, and as the work continued on starting the plant back up, we could also work on finding out where Pennywise was with more people around than just our small group.

So we started working there, and soon years started going by. The sense of dread in the plant lessened all the time, and we eventually all assumed Pennywise had moved on. The only reason we were so stupid as to believe that was because we were still under his spell. I knew this in the back of my mind, but it was hard to make any headway on our original quest when everything seemed so normal in the now bustling plant.

One day, an employee committed suicide. It was tragic, but we all moved on after a week since it was such a large company and hardly anyone knew each other.

Then one of my friends from our original group asked me to come over to his apartment for beers and pizza. We chatted, shot the shit, but then after a few beers his mood darkened. He asked me if I remembered why we came there in the first place. I said I did, and his eyes met mine. He said none of the others did. He said they all remember coming here to get a job. A shiver went down my spine before he told me we needed to find him, because he never left. He said the recent suicide was just the start of the death to come. I told him we would make a plan the next day after we sobered up and had a chance to think. He begrudgingly agreed, and we said goodnight and I went home.

The next day I couldn't find him, and he wasn't answering calls. I knew what I had to do. I marched up to the boss's office. He sat me down, asked what was on my mind. I said I was worried about my friend. He said that he had quit and left town, but that he'd get his new contact info for me once he had it. As he said this, he was staring hard into my eyes. He knew I knew he was lying, but he didn't care. He wanted to see my reaction. I stood up, neckhairs stiff as nails, and said, "I know who you fucking are, you--"

Before I could finish, he had grabbed my face and the last thing I remembered was his teeth coming into my face and his burning eyes.

I woke up in my apartment, in a daze, remembering nothing about the event clearly. Or maybe I did, but it was like my mind had been sedated into not recognizing what it meant. They got increasingly grim, including inane messages scrawled on the walls in blood before killing themselves in fucked up ways. I knew that the force over my mind would soon drive me to do the same-- once I realized this, everything snapped back clearly. The fog was gone. I ran downstairs, I flew out the door, and there was his car in the street, about to drive off.

I sprinted at the car, and his eyes locked on mine as I screamed "I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE!!" like some kamikaze pilot.

He stood up out of the car, snarling, face changing in front of my eyes as people stared in numb silence, and he came at me and into my mind. I felt a wave of indescribable terror and death

Quite possibly the best execution of the "mimic human" concept.

When I was a kid I saw this movie having seen no ads and didn't know what to expect. At the start it seemed like the typical slasher but as the movie went on it slowly revealed that the creeper was much more than that, and despite all its efforts to apear human it could never quite mask its monstrous nature, however it's aggressive behaviour could have simply been the cause of the most basic of motivational instincts

Personal theory I made up just this second. The G-Man and his benefactors are just as influential as the combine empire and have close ties, only the empire is expanding rapidly and it's just getting out of control.

He's not the original creator of Crossed though. Garth Ennis is. Ennis does gore and shock well too. Perhaps better. The difference is that beneath that his work tends to have substance. Yea. The Punisher was one of the first titles I ever got into when I was a teenager and just starting to read comics. I liked it back then, but over time Marvel just ran out of ideas. I mean having him take over a Mafia family? Making him and angel, and fighting demons? It got ridiculous.

I'd quit reading comics by then anyway. It was in the last few years that I decided to get back into them. Ennis' run on the Punisher was a big reason for that. No one before, or since has done the character justice. I didn't realize that back in the day, but after Ennis, I can't take the ones I grew up with seriously anymore either. I guess in a way, he ruined the character, but at least he did it in a very awesome way, and it was totally worth it.
