The only preparation I've really done is to get the items together to assemble a makeshift electric arc furnace, including the bentonite clay sand to pour and mold into. It's powered by car batteries, and sparks at like 5000 degrees celsius, so it should be able to melt just about any metal, over time. It melts a penny in like, 5 seconds.

In the event that it's grid down, and assuming the government doesn't kidnap me for being an irregular, or lynched by the locals for being the same, I'll be that guy that smelts makeshift solar reflectors for everyone, and creates tools out of melted tin cans. I have a plan to produce electricity out of garbage and thermal reflections from the sun, in the event of. Wouldn't look pretty, and I can't exactly sell it on Etsy, but I'd be the only guy still taking hot showers the day of.

I downloaded wikipedia, as well. Because, y'know. Knowledge.

some tips for extreme catastrophes:

1 don't share it too much cause it won't work if you do.
Have a pack of cigarettes or two, many people are addicted to smoking, it's one of the best items you could possibly think of to trade.
Small, lightweight and worth a lot when you wait long enough, people who are really addicted would probably even be willing to trade their last bit of food for some cigarettes.

2 learn something like yoga or qigong, it helps you gain control over and strengthen your body, including your immune system.
This is very important as during a catastrophic event it will be much harder to get medical attention, during a flood most people die from diseases and other preventable problems, not the flood itself. (If you only train for these types of events instead of general health I would recommend doing something that has more uses than just stimulating health though, like tai chi or whm)

3 have basic survival tools that can be used in your region.
You probably won't ever need these which is why I said basic survival tools, so please don't buy a generator or something like that unless you're completely paranoid.
There are more events in which these items will be useless, but for the few that it does apply (think like problems with infrastucure after war, like germany after WWII) it might be useful to have.
