Lincoln, I read, had a very high pitched, academic voice and way of expression. Just imagine him as a nerd of his time, and you can see why he looked quite ridiculous. Being President didn't mean 30-60 minutes on the makeup chair in those days.

Of course, the style of photography at the time meant you had your "photo look" since photography was so much rarer, and you tried to look less cheesy and happy (as people do in modern photos) and more mysterious and powerful. He was putting on that face in this shot, clearly.
