People didn't even research on computers back then. The dewey decibel system was in place at libraries. Encarta did not even exist. The internet was years away.

In 2008 though you could make a "google it" joke about a person to make them seem like a know nothing nerd.

Ask yourself just one question. Does that joke make more sense in 1988 or 2008?

Using the computer to look up stuff was legit. I wrote reports in middle school, went to the library just long enough to get a bibliography and then wrote papers from online info.

A computer is something nerds used to analyse things.

If somebody gave you a long, rambling, analytical explanation of why you were a lousy comedian, and brought out a computer to do so (which is something that took effort in the 80s), then the comedian really must suck. It's self-deprecating humor.

If you want something equivalent today, instead of "computer" imagine "Let me show you this Powerpoint presenstation."
