Alaya-Vijnana (storehouse consciousness) is the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is not non-conscious, rather, it is a phenomenologically impotent, dormant, undifferentiated state of consciousness, which we experience during deep sleep. It underlies all waking consciousness constantly, and all "leves" of consciousness "above" it, in the same way the depths of the ocean underly its surface.

Our dominant, manifest, "surface" consciousness is an array of different senses and sense-objects. Alaya-Vijnana underlies all
of those senses and sense objects. Alaya-Vijnana is in other words, consciousness itself. Buddhist thinking categorises consciousness into different senses and sense objects, like eye consciousness and its objects of sight, ear consciousness and its objects of sound, and so on. But they all obviously have something in common, they all belong to the aggregate of consciousness (vjinana), and Alaya-vijnana is what is common to all types of sense-consciousness - sights, sounds, smells, sensations, thoughts, feelings and emotions are all different, but they are all within consciousness.

Apart from simply pointing out a common sense facet of our experience, the concept of Alaya-Vijnana emphasises that formless, undifferentiated and dormant level of consciousness as a different current of consciousness to manifest consciousness, like a deep current at the bottom of a stream, underneath the currents on its surface.

This dormant level of consciousness underlying our active, manifest waking consciousness at all times is said to act as a receptacle of impressions made by the senses and their objects, including the mind and its mental life of thoughts, feelings, perceptions and emotions.

As well as acting in a receiving capacity of impressions from the conscious mind, it is also said to act as the source of the conscious phenomena, the senses, and their objects. As such it is constantly in flux as it continually receives impressions, and gives rise to the manifest array of conscious phenomena.

As well as being the unconscious source of the senses and their objects, it is also posited as the source and home of memory and the habits and patterns that shape the personality and psyche. As such it can be understood as the subjective, phenomenal correspondent of the unconscious activities of the brain.
