So basically, I moved to a small town in my country about 15 months ago. It's a pretty shit town t.b.h. I don't think more than 1000 people live here. I moved because I was going through some kind of existential crisis at the time. I had some money, bought a small house and moved away from all the shit. Let's start now.

Taking someone else with you would be the best scenario but with a gun you should be grand.

One massive flaw I see with this story if your claim that the guy walked for 20 mins or whatever along a trail to the strange place.

If it was that long then surely just walk around the church and youll find the trail and then you dont have to risk being seen by the 2m thing/guy. There's no way a tunnel etc went for 20 mins walking distance.
