No, it isn't. As much as I've liked any other thing Refn has ever done, this was an enormous turd of a film. It tried to further develop the aesthetics of his previous movies and it just ended up with a number of color planes intersecting on the screen without reason or beauty, and the symbolism was wholly unnecessary and laughable. I've heard him say that it was done without a script, but that is not much of a reason to forgive it - he could have gone to abstraction, rather.

It's a terrible film. The guy has gotten so enamoured of his own aesthetic sensibility that he's ceased to be a movie director and become a fashion magazine photographer. It's a shame - he's asphyxiating his own talent.

I saw Elvis & Nixon before it, though, and that's really pretty good.

Vanilla Sky is pretty great - if only because it's such an aberration in Cameron Crowe's filmography. A run of heartwarming romantic dramas for music fans then - out of nowhere - a gnosticy film with a few really memorable nightmarish moments.

It's a shame he never developed that aspect of his filmmaking further. I think he's really talented, but lacks ambition.
