Okay at the risk of laying some actual occult-type wisdom on /x/ I'll explain.

This particular cipher is essentially using a 3x3 grid to represent SOMETHING which we will assume are letters that spell out English words.

Step one is to make a list of all the different arrangements of the 3x3 grid that appear in the book

Step two is to assign a letter to each one of these, presuming there are 26 or less. If there's more than 26 or MAYBE 30 including punctuation marks then it's already something more than just an english language cipher

Step three is to take advantage of good old modern technology and plug the entire ciphered text into a piece of deciphering software and let it solve it for you.

One additional assumption I would probably make when inputting the ciphered text is that line breaks don't indicate anything and should just be run together and it's only the actual spaces that should be put in as spaces. Lines appear to be 5 characters long btw, other than the title page which I would omit from the software since its spacing is less clear and there's plenty of text in the rest of the book for the program to use to work on. Once the cipher is solved you can manually decipher the title page anyway since you'll know what letter represents what 3x3 grid character.

OP here. The pages are very stiff, like the rings are basically as small as they can get while still fitting together. You can't really change the shape of the characters but pushing them around.

I'm inclined to agree. As I said before I think that thing was made in the 20th century to evoke an antique aesthetic, Mason style but I'm sure there are plenty of anons who know more about chain mail than I do.

Also interesting to note is that by some accounting there are 38 different unique phonetic sounds in the English language. If each character represented one of these kana style the message could be a lot longer but also much harder to decode.

If there's truly no logic to the link spacing he probably just eyeballed that element and it is indeed meaningless. To keep your brain from overheating on this pass it may be best to assume that any column shifting if it even exists is accidental and that the shape of the characters is what matters. This may actually have been the intentional implication of having the middle row be only 2 wide to be a "waistline" that never sticks out beyond any corner. This would also make it easier to actually sight-read if a person was well versed in the cipher.

(not to mention make it easier for you to transcode)

Maybe I'm a bad Israeli kike whose first language is Hebrew, but I can't make out much of it.
I think it only seems Hebrew because of the fact that it's written in curved chains, which makes some letters look slightly similar to letters like "א" or "נ" or even "ש".

Unfortunately most deciphering software wouldn't be able to break the code if the letters were reversed since they don't spell words. Our brains are able to see things backwards without trying but a computer has to be taught. If anyone is especially suspicious that is the case though they can just reverse the transcoded cipher and put that into the deciphering software. Likewise if someone sees something different than others in the spacing or line order or reading direction. This is where the more people who are messing with it the better. If someone does correctly solve it, it'll become clear to everyone - or everyone who's not a troll and/or a total ignoramus.

I know how this is done because I used to prowl antique stores for ephemera and buy anything that had coded writing in it. It will still be useful to transcode the symbols into letters even if it's reversed since the symbols will still be discrete whichever way they may be oriented. Getting them into a format that can be plugged into deciphering software is the current hurdle. Once they're converted to data the computer can easily understand, it'll be easy to say reverse the whole string or rearrange the lines from bottom to to or re-order them to try reading from right to left until you find something to feed the software it's able to make SOME sense of then use your quantum-thinking to derive sense for the dataset as a whole

I also assigned each symbol an 8-digit binary ID so that I could keep track of them in Excel. According to my count, the book has 113 symbols total, and 35 unique symbols. Most appear multiple times throughout the text, 9 of them only appear once, and one of them appears 16 times

This is definitely some kind of a phonetic code that couldn't be solved through "decrypting". There's some elements of the words missing and then there's some key to adding them back in. That part at the back seems to be saying it's hidden in the margins but I don't see anything in the margins on those pages. That dire warning at the beginning is also there to try to keep people from "filling in the blanks" instead of actually learning the code. Are there more "key" pages? Are any pages torn out?

If the chainmail book is something similar to this it'll kind of suck because a code that's both phonetic and ciphered would be much harder to crack but could contain much more information.

Phonetic codes also seem more "arcane" to the uninitiated who might try to pronounce the incomplete word fragments. Something like that is probably where Lovecraft got his idea for the elder language.
