This is what's going on. "Reincarnation" is more like biological hereditary. Your "I" is unrepeatable because it is based on unrepeatable biological conditions.

For every body there is a consciousness correspondent exactly to it.

Metaphorically, we might express this as every rose, by virtue of it being a rose, has a shade of red that corresponds exactly to its genetic history. In the same way, your biological conditions have a history, a "being" that is the sum total of the tendencies and karmic "luggage" (understood purely as the effects of many past causes, not as some moral judgment) that eventually went to create your "I" as you are, since you obviously didn't will yourself into existence


When you die, your elements return to this being, and it engenders more "I"s, but they are not you. The goal is to escape this cycle. To transcend it
