This one actually spooks me a bit, but I really hate hospitals. They're probably the most miserable place the average person will ever find themselves in, and there's something about the way they're all total rats nest mazes of dimly lit corridors and mysterious doors that really makes them creepy as shit. The sirens where I live sound nothing like that. They just make one continuous sound.

Sometimes I get nervous when they're testing them, because I'm worried that maybe it's not a test and something serious is really going on but I have no idea because I'm just sitting at my computer with no TV or radio on to give me the EAS message that would tell me what's happening.

I can remember visiting a specific beach when I was a child that would play a siren to signify that the tide was coming in. This beach was essentially a sandbar, and as the tide rose, the sea would loop round behind you, forming a fast moving channel that separated you from the mainland. As a little kid, the panic it caused was immesurable.

I grew up in LA in the late '80s and early '90s and we still had air raid sirens back then. I wouldn't say they tested them regularly, but they certainly did it once or twice a year. There was one like half a block from my elementary school and I remember our teachers having to stop and wait for them to shut up before they could continue the lesson.

Old ass towns in the west will have one that pretty much just goes off for forest fires. Any place in shitty alley will have a siren that is re-purposed for tornadoes. You go to a coastal town turning shit weather you're likely to hear their horn go off for hurricanes and tsunami. Maybe your city doesn't test its horn often enough for you to notice, but you can't fucking sit there and say you've never had your television or radio screech at you and tell you that it is a test of the emergency broadcast system.

Sirens tested here in Chicago too, every first Tuesday of the month. I occasionally hear it.

Here in Hawaii, they test the sirens around noon on the first working day of each month.
