I want to start meditating. I don't really believe in the hocus pocus spiritual stuff, but I figure even if it's just a placebo thing it has positive effects for people. Where should I start /x/?

Hypocrite
>I wanna learn about reality
>But I'm going to ignore what reality says about itself in favor of pleasing my inherent intellectual insecurity

Fuck off with your shit. Real magic is self-improvement. Lift weights, read books, make money and fuck bitches. When you make it, come back and then you'll be ready.

Unless you wanna kill that buddah of yours, you're not going nowhere.

I mean seriously you want us to tell you how to do something this simple?

Well then since it'd be a waste of this thread to not even answer the question here is the most basic technique:
Set a timer for 10-30 minutes.
Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight.
Focus on your breath, but don't try to breathe yourself, just let it happen.
Now when you notice a thought try not to pay attention to it, just observe it and let it go.
Now just continue doing this untill the timer goes off and you're done with this session.
Repeat once or twice a day preferably in the morning when you wake up and in the evening before you go to sleep.
Do this daily, you should notice the first big results after 1-2 weeks.

You're welcome.

I meditate to help with my anxiety so i'll offer a bit of advice to get you started.
>learn to focus on one thing in your environment
>I chose my breathing because you can control your heart rate to reduce anxiety
>focus on your breathing and only your breathing while drowning out everything else in your environment
>practice this enough and you will be able to snap right into a meditation state while focusing on other shit of your choice

Dude, what?

Meditating is about clearing your mind of noise so you can see things exactly the way they are.

All you have to do is just sit there and be. You'll get distracted, then refocus, then get distracted again, etc. You also have to make a practice of this sort of focus in your daily life, a sort of "meditation in motion."

Eventually you'll get to a point where almost all of your actions are taken intuitively with very little mental judgement, labeling or emotional reaction necessary.

The idea, again, is to walk along the "razor's edge" of the present moment, where nothing matters but what's right in front of you, and you just intuitively understand what to do all the time. It's very natural, and gives almost a rush of vitality. I'm terrible at explaining it but do you see what I'm kind of getting at here? It's very simple. Just sit, man. 15 minutes a day, 30 minutes, whatever, and remain aware and present in everything you do.

Read the book titled: "The Mind Illuminated: A Complete Meditation Guide Integrating Buddhist Wisdom and Brain Science"

You can find it like every other book on the internet.

all free so nothing to worry about. has some nice resources. nothing "spiritual" about it either, even if the practices have their roots in spirituality. you could probably benefit from this in terms of handling stress and negative emotions in everyday life. don't know if that's what you're after but this is one way to go about it.
>>
im going to try something new for /x/ standards. im going explain it to you as simple and nonpretentiously as possible. you don't have to be some spiritual motherfucker to meditate. the whole point of it is to control your own mind and relax. its an actuall factual thing that takes zero talent.
>get comfy.sit or lay down, doesn't matter
>close your eyes and try to focus on letting go. physically not philosophically.you know when you tense up your muscles then release them? just try to feel that releasing feeling through your body)
>it makes it easier if you just do parts of your body at a time
>dont have to think of anything in particular, let your mind wander and don't stress about whether you should be thinking or not
>after a while of unfocusing your mind and relaxing your body, you'll get to a numb, almost like sleep paralysis state. you wont feel ANYTHING. you'll have no thoughts, no sensation of having a body. just you in the center of your mind being competely relaxed.
>>
heres a cool method i don't see people here talk about much
>lay down for a while untill youre pretty relaxed, arms at side, palms facing up
>try to imagine beams of water or energy shooting out of your palms. focus your energy there and try to become less aware of the rest of your body
>VERY slowly, lift your arms and start bringing your palms together over your chest
keep imagining the beams of water shooting out of your hands. you want to imagine the pressure that would be there if there was. like theres actually something between your hands causing resistance. i think what this does forces your body to relax from making you use more energy than you need? anyway if you do it slowly enough, before your hands even touch, you'll stop feeling them. you'll go into high on morphine mode i swear to heck its that crazy. the guy who first posted it explained it all in an artsy and faggy like manner so i thought it was bullshit but its actually pretty wack
