It's sort of complicated to explain, so I was hoping there'd be people more experienced with it.
The concept originated from the theosophical society, and the idea is to represent the "aura" of a certain idea, I guess. If you really want to get into it, there's a book about them here: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/16269/16269-h/16269-h.htm
But that's a bit more supernatural and esoteric than I am.
