I want to build an altar.
What uses would one have? What're some designs I could use for it?
The moldy slice of bread freaks me out more than the wildly eclectic nature of the altar space.

I-I'm not getting a lot of answers here.
Alters act as a place that alters the setting.
So you are asking us for tips on making a thanksgiving centerpiece.

>Alters act as a place that alters the setting.
al·tar
ˈôltər/Submit
noun
the table in a Christian church at which the bread and wine are consecrated in communion services.
a table or flat-topped block used as the focus for a religious ritual, especially for making sacrifices or offerings to a deity.
An altar builds itself like a fetish builds itself. It's like none of you have read Jung.

It depends on what you're trying to worship
as a Catholic I just have a table with my cross on
supposedly an altar represents the way you organize your subjective psychology - go for symbolic objects that have accurate and specific symbolic relevance in your world view, so in time once you get comfortable with a set altar it will act as a psychic mirror for your supposedly neatly and magically arranged internal cosmeau. supposedly over time idols and magical objects get magnetized and may have some pronounced effect on your psyche. if you don't follow a set paradigm for theurgic practice, which often times would mean kabbala, you'll need to do some thinking. what are you worshipping and what for mayne

Pretty much this. It is your mind represented esoterically. Mine is a bit shit right now but better than it was.

You must first understand the concept of "sacred", which means a thing set apart from mundane use. Your shrine should ideally be divided from the rest of your space; in a cabinet is good, but behind a curtain or covered with a cloth (when not in use) is adequate. It's for special use, not looking at all the time.
You should have a specific purpose for it, and the central object should be something that represents that purpose to you. This main object should be the largest. Other objects, incense, candles; these are window dressing. Don't over-accessorize.

Can I create an altar for anything? Meditation, casting, sigil creation?

they're asking for an altar, not a shrine and the two are distinctly different. a shrine's primary use is for worship while an altar can primarily be used for actual magic work
also OP you have to be specific. you can want to build an altar all you want but you're not telling any of us what it's for. you're not even mentioning if said altar follows a specific path or religion. we can't help you if we don't know because YOU don't know. the first altar posted is wiccan btw

Well, I'm not exactly sure what I'd build it for. I used to be deep into /x/ about 5 years ago, but eventually phased out, I'm trying to get back in to the swing of things.
Perhaps a good start for me would be one for meditation. Would that even be particularly useful?
