My grand uncle was on the first flight to the south pole itself. A few miles underneath all that cock load of ice lies a few structures that are powered by some sort of primitive version of hydroelectricity. As someone who has been to the Arctic and antarctica, it's just a huge frozen wasteland. Miles and miles of nothing. If there is anything interesting there it's well hidden.
However, it feels like being on another planet or in some other dimension.
