Plutarch around 100AD explained the earth and moon had to be spheres to explain the shadows during eclipses. If the Earth or Moon weren't spheres the shadows would be some really odd shapes. This is PART of Plutarch's explanation that the shadows were cone shaped caused by light on sphere shaped Earth & Moon, the guy is insanely long winded and wanders all over fuck when he writes, but you can get the idea from this.
