Is anyone else genuinely scared of VHS tapes like me? It's probably from disturbing things that happened to me as a kid, but I can never watch VHS tapes without getting spooked to shit. It has something to do with the subtle distortion and shit in some of the old tapes, it really puts me off.
>>
I don't watch tapes anymore, but I used to get nervous if I watched a tape that was a recording, as opposed to a purchased video. I was scared for some reason that if I watched it twice, it would be different the second time. Not completely different, just with little things changed about it. Lines spoken differently, or things like that. I don't know why it scared me, but I wouldn't watch them alone. My childhood reasoning was that if someone else was there, then I would have someone to back me up if it was different.
>>
OP here, the main reason for me being scarred for life when it comes to VHS tapes, is that back when i was like 7, I had this weird "demo" tape that came with the player. The tape was from the early 90s, but it was extreamly distorted, and watching it for the first time at night left me in tears and shock. I don't really remember it too much but I honestly have never felt that terrified in my life.

There's a lot of people who are creeped out by old logos production companies used on vhs tapes. It's a special kind of spooky. Analog spooky.

http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-1981

SCP-1981 is a standard Betamax tape. "RONALD REGAN CUT UP WHILE TALKING"(sic) has been handwritten on the adhesive sticker in felt tip pen. Laboratory analysis indicates that SCP-1981 is made of ordinary material, and serial numbers correspond with home cassette tapes produced in September of 1980. SCP-1981 was initially encountered by a filing clerk in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in 1991, who upon watching it alerted the police, with the intent to find the tape's creator to press "obscenity charges".

>>
>>17005884

Does anyone else think that old technology is a recurring theme in horror, and is generally something scary to a lot of younger people because we're used to being in complete control while interfacing with it? Stuff like old vhs tapes, 'haunted' retro video games, numbers stations, even more modern stuff like hackers and cyber terrorists. I feel like these are more modern kinds of horror you see in a lot of creepypastas and newer movies but not in older stuff.
>>
I didn't like the way the ones that you could record stuff from tv on would sort of distort and fade into something else recorded previously. Can't say I was super scared of it but I didn't like it much
>>
So for those anons who want to buy some old weird VHS tapes: A good resource is thrift store outlet stores. Yes they exist. I know goodwill has them, and the local thrift store in my state has a few outlet stores.

What separates the outlet thrift store from the normal ones is that things are sold by the pound (with individual pricing on certain things).

The reason these places are a good resource is because this is where VHS tapes with home movies, or old TV recordings end up. I'm sure most of the old commercials one can find are youtube are only there thanks largely to this.

As for my own experience, I once bought a VHS tape that had "TAKE ME" written on the side. It ended up being some random peoples home footage featuring their naked toddler daughter playing in their yard. It wasn't shot in a pervy way at all, but whoever wrote "take me" on it was obvs a pedo. As soon as my curiosity was sated I destroyed the tape and trashed it.

I want to find more though, especially after typing this out.

> As soon as my curiosity was sated I destroyed the tape and trashed it

It's okay anon. You can be honest here.

Eh, as far as CP goes, normal home video stuff like that isn't very compelling. Saw no reason to keep it.

Several years ago I was starting out as an assistant editor for Afv, back when Bob Saget was still the host. It was an awesome experience getting a start in the industry back then, but seeing this thread reminded me of something that had happened once.
We would receive videos from all over the nation by the thousands (obviously), sometimes they were crude, sometimes they were down right obscene. One October we were having a contest for a Halloween themed video show. We received all kinds of videos trying to scare the viewers, mostly jump scares and the occasional fake gore, and a few were actually pretty creepy.
But one video was sent in that was fairly unsettling. At first glance it was harmless. Some person was filming the outside of their two story house at night. Well manicured yard. Trimmed squared hedges, a few other family members could be seen inside through the window with a few pumpkins sitting on the porch. We all gathered around the editor and someone finally asked, "so when's the scare or gore or funny moment happen?"
The editor said "that's my house. I have no idea who filmed this..."
There was no return address on the package. We keep in touch still, to this day she still has no idea who was filming her and her family that night, or how they knew to send it to the studio.

I find vhs comfy too. I sort of miss those vhs days when you only had tv, antenna and vhs.
>>
Which is creepier: analog VHS distortion, or crappy digital Youtube/mp3 compression? The VHS "aesthetic" has been totally strip-mined by creepypastas written by kids born after VHS had already been replaced by DVD, but I'll always associate bad digital compression and low bitrates with the pre-Facebook, pre-Twitter internet, when everything was more spread out among billions of random web pages. You never really knew what you'd run into.

Something about videos like these weird me out because we're right at the point in time where there's still all these weird-ass people out in rural areas with really old computers making obscure videos that no one will ever watch.
>>
>>17006953
This. Extremely obvious shitty fake VHS adobe effects.

People fetishize the VHS look but are too fucking lazy to actually record anything to a tape.

>>
>>17005884
I digitized loads of tapes for people as a hobby. And old video tapes are indeed creepy. Digitizing is realtime and although I had good hardware at the time, I would sometimes check the footage for tracking and/or dropped frames. And when you're half asleep, checking the footage and it switches to totally different footage because somebody taped over it can be very scary. Family holiday footage where an interview was taped over and the interviewee stares right at you... Or even worse, holiday footage recorded over a horror movie... Holiday footage ends, BOOM, horror movie.

LOL. How old are you kids? You want to know TRUE fear. Try renting a VHS porno and have the magnetic tape break off.

I knew the video store would charge me about $80 to pay for it. That's what they paid per VHS tape back in the day. They couldn't just go to Walmart and buy a shitload of VHS tapes to rent out. That was illegal. They had to pay mom & pop video store prices.

I had a porn tape break on me once. I actually took the VHS tape apart & with some Scotch tape and ingenuity, fixed it. I Be Kinded and Rewinded and never heard from the video store since :)

tfw I have about 800 VHS tapes in my attic about 60% are recordings
tfw I have 3 VHS players/recorders around me right now
tfw I had 5 but had to throw out 2 because they broke
tfw I can Rip VHS tapes to PC
tfw I can transfer modern vids to from PC to VHS

So far have only gone trough about 40 tapes. Never even once been spooked. Not that much weird stuff (yet). Some of them have significant quality loss.
The most ''weird'' shit I found was public acces porn from the 80s.
Anyway its some great entertainment for when I am alone and got nothing better to do.

I really get annoyed at the whole "it's before my time, it's spooooooopy" stuff. Pictures of people from the 1800s are not scary. VHS tapes are not scary. Unless it's Howard the Duck maybe. Are pocketwatches scary? Do you get weirded out by those buckets ice cream used to get made in?

Old ass magnetic tape gets distortions. Big whoop. Vinyl albums get scratches. Has nothing to do with ghosts or anything, it's just shitty old mediums. I know you grew up all digital but it may shock you to know a lot of us didn't. There's nothing scary about fucking rotary phones either. Or a Tandy computer.

Watch CLEAR LAKES 44

It's a weberies that's developing on YouTube by the THAC team (or what's left of them), who also made Marble Hornets. Uses VHS distortion really well and is a gripingly vague story so far.

Don't read anything about it beforehand, but watch Ringu at midnight by yourself - bonus points if you have a tv in your bedroom.
>>
>>17012097
I doubt it. VHS tapes are considered "creepy" because people are starting to become unfamiliar with the kind of distortion old degraded tapes give. But DVDs won't ever give that level of distortion - if the damage to the disc exceeds the protection given by the FEC then decoding just fails completely.

I have a cardboard box in my closet that contains mostly childhood photos but also a number of cassette tapes from what I suppose was an old camcorder of my parents. Not really spooky, just kind of a neat little time capsule of sorts.
