mass surveillance was never really a conspiracy theory...it was always known and assumed within security, cryptoanarchist and criminal circles.

The unknown that was proven was simply the specifics of what's actually being done, and thus it became common knowledge to normalfags outside of the IT field.

Everyone who knew dick about computers before snowden knew networks were monitored, at least by the ISPs, with the implied knowledge that the government could "request" whatever data they wanted at any time.
